I’m not sure if it was first seen in a kindergarten picture book or an NHK cartoon.

To those who are in need or hungry, let them eat his own face first.
If there is a crying child, a weak animal, or a friend, he puts them on his back and flies away.

That is Anpanman.

If there is such a thing as “worthiness,” it seems to me, that’s what it is.
Thus Anpanman is my ideal hero.

“Offering food to people in need or hunger is the “right thing to do”’ regardless of your position or country. This is absolute ‘justice’” (page30)

“Heroes beat up bad guys, but they don’t help starving people. So I thought that if I were going to write a story, I would make a hero who helps hungry people. That was my motivation of starting to draw Anpanman.”(page36)
