Nuovo Cinema Paradiso (1988) Director: Giuseppe Tornatore.
I heard that “New Cinema Paradise” was being shown on 35mm film at Cinema Ten in Tachikawa, so I went to see it. This is a movie I remember renting a video of and watching decades ago.
At the beginning of the movie, brown pot and white curtains are shown against the shining Sicilian sea, and music by Ennio Morricone plays. The soft screen of the 35mm film stirs something within me.
Then, a conversation between Toto’s mother and sister are shown. The atmosphere of the room, the brown-skinned sister with her big round eyes, made me realize “wow, this is indeed an Italian movie.” The brown-skinned sister with big eyes made me realize it was indeed an Italian movie. I felt that I had not seen a proper movie for a long time.
Alfredo, a projectionist, speaks to Toto whom he loved, when Toto was leaving for Rome for pursuing the way to be a film director :
“Whatever you do, love what you do just as you loved the projection room when you were a child.”
This is probably what a person’s life is all about.
I felt like reading Nagaharu Yodogawa’s essay on movies, which I haven’t read for a long time. (Viewing date 21/04/2024)
